ICRC assists record numbers of IDPs in 2009
In 2009, some 4.6 million internally displaced people benefited from humanitarian assistance provided by the ICRC, in association with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, in 33 countries all over the world. The ICRC increased its assistance to displaced people in response to greater needs in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Pakistan, the Philippines, Somalia and Yemen and thanks to better access in Iraq.

Women and displacement: strength in adversity
The displacement of populations is one of the gravest consequences of today's armed conflicts. On the occasion of International Women's Day (8 March) the ICRC is drawing attention to the hardship displaced women endure, and to their courage, resilience and resourcefulness in times of adversity.

Children and the ravages of war
To mark the 20th, 50th and 60th anniversaries of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the Declaration of the Rights of the Child and the Geneva Conventions, respectively, the ICRC has issued a new brochure on children and war. ICRC child protection adviser, Kristin Barstad, talks about the plight of children during war and what the organization does to protect and assist them.

ICRC opinion survey in eight countries
As part of the Our world. Your move. campaign the ICRC has carried out different quantitative (statistical) and qualitative (personal interviews and focus groups) research initiatives designed to give a voice to the world's most vulnerable people and raise awareness of the plight of civilians living in situations of armed conflict and violence. Survey in Afghanistan, Colombia, DR of the Congo, Georgia, Haiti, Lebanon, Liberia and the Philippines.

Haiti: opening of Our World – At War photo exhibition
